I feel like this has come up a lot in my conversations recently, but here it is, in The New York Times: what if burnout is more about isolation than the work itself? As someone who lives alone and works largely remote these days, I have to admit I think there’s truth here. I don’t miss commuting, but I do miss feeling as if I am a part of the world— seen by it, known by it, witnessed and in witness of others.

Those of you following the Hobart controversy this week, I would love to hear your thoughts. I’ve worked with and adjacent to the publishing world for a long time, and there are a lot of reasons I turned my back on that dream. But I also believe there are ways to raise the point that the entire literary world is incredibly classist without also offending other people along the way. It doesn’t have to be either/or, people!
