Are you from a rural community or the American South? Share your story with us to be published in an upcoming newsletter!
I so deeply enjoy Brandon Taylor’s writing, and this recent edition of his newsletter blew me away. In it, he discusses life in Iowa City versus New York, as well as the idea of paying attention to generate inspiration. Just brilliantly done. I will be thinking about this for weeks:
An old piece, but Roxane Gay talked to singer Kelis about leaving LA to move to a farm. Love to see it.
This is a great profile of organizer and activist Warren Tidwell, who was named to Reckon South’s 2022 list. As he says: “I had this self-loathing thing that I think a lot of white Southerners have, like, how do I come to terms with such a painful past and such horrific things that I benefitted from? I used to take this strange comfort in thinking we (the South) had the market cornered on all the bad stuff, like racism and bigotry, and that if we could fix it here, we could fix it anywhere. And as I’ve grown, I’ve learned that there are sadly bigots from sea to shining sea. But there’s a lot to love about the rural South. And there are things I’ve seen from rural folks that I wish other people could see.”
Anyone else spend a lot of time lately thinking about the end of the world? Anne Helen Petersen is unpacking building a “rugged, resilient society” in her newsletter, Culture Study.
On that note, this is a cool piece in Harper’s about replicating the planet’s ecosystems.
Urban planning is so much more complicated than I always imagined it to be. Do you ever think about how water gets to your house? You should.
Here is how I think we learn to live in the end times. We love anyway:
