Announcing LANDMARKS with Elephant Micah
Part two of our new folk music series, coming on March 20th.
Hi Folks,
Dropping in here after a bit of a hiatus (I’m more or less attempting to be off most tech these days, but I’ll write about that in greater depth soon) to announce the second iteration of LANDMARKS, a new live folk music series between WXYC, Good Folk, and Fatwood Studio. LANDMARKS seeks to engage with the creative and critical communities built around folk and traditional music in the Triangle area.
I’m thrilled to say that we return next week on Thursday, March 20th at 6:30pm (it’s short notice, I know, I’m sorry!) with our second guest, Joseph O’Connell of Elephant Micah.
Joe is a folklorist and songwriter who performs as cult-favorite underground act Elephant Micah. Weaving together ethnographic inspiration with an experimental approach, over the last 21 years, Elephant Micah's sound "has roved among traditional, plainspoken folk, gleaming, elegant folk-rock, and electronic frisson" (Indy Week). Joe's set will be followed by a conversation with myself/the Good Folk podcast.
I’m personally quite excited about this one; it’ll be an excellent evening for those interested in the intersections of folklore and creative practice. I met Joe during my very first semester of graduate school, when we TA’ed a Southern Studies course together at UNC. Joe and I have since both transferred over to Duke and both continue to integrate folkloric methods into our work. When we began envisioning this series, I knew immediately that Joe was someone we needed involved in the project, and I’m thrilled to have him join us.
All tickets for LANDMARKS are on a donation-basis; all proceeds go directly to the artists and contributors for this event. Tickets are a suggested donation of $12; higher amounts are certainly welcome, but no one will be turned away.
Fatwood Studio is located in rural Orange County, just west of Carrboro. For more information on parking and location, please see our Eventbrite page. For any problems or questions regarding the event, please email us at goodfolksonly@gmail.com.
